The Gu Family Book
Genres: Romance, Drama, Action, Fantasy
Full of fantasy, romance, and action, this drama won't disappoint you. Although some of you might feel skeptical about the fantasy portion, this drama managed to make it not cheesy! The bond between the main characters make you fall in love with their world, but beware of strong emotional reactions. If you're a Lee Seung-gi fan like me, then you will love this drama even more! Suzy's character is one of those main characters you can feel empathetic toward. The songs (OST) are also very touching (Go 4-Men!). This drama also incorporates some historical content, such as the fashion in ancient Korea, as well as the power struggle between the court officials and the wealthy.
The Master's Sun
Genres: Romance, Fantasy, Horror
Starring So Ji-sub and Gong Hyo-jin, this horror laced drama introduces a new way to fall in love: by seeing ghosts. Gong Hyo-jin plays a tired recluse who can see and consequently help ghosts. She meets So Ji-sub, who is a wealthy CEO of a large mall. He is the only one who can make her feel at ease, and sleep peacefully; however, in addition to her special ability, his selfish ways, tragic past, and manipulating family make their relationship all the more difficult. How will they overcome these obstacles? What happens when other romantic propositions appear? Watch this drama to find out. Caution: the ghosts can be scary.
Full House
Genres: Romance, Drama, Comedy
Unlike the last two, this one does not involve any fantasy, but it's not as realistic as you want it to be. This drama, adapted from a Manhwa, is about an average girl who, after mishaps and misfortunes, ends up living with a famous actor. The actor, portrayed by Rain, makes her clean and cook for him in exchange for room and board. I particularly like this drama because of the chemistry between the characters. They are both cute in their own way, and you look forward to seeing them together. This drama is definitely worth watching!
Secret Garden
Genres: Romance, Comedy, Fantasy, Gender Switch
How can we not include Secret Garden in this list? This drama not only has two famous Korean stars, Hyun Bin and Ha Ji-won, but also an interesting gender swap component. There's the basic rich boy meets poor girl theme, but then rich boy's soul gets switched with poor girl's soul? What!? One morning the main characters find themselves in the other's body. Luckily, they figure out the cause pretty soon, and are able to deal with this. Then you throw in some family drama and romantic rivals, and voila, you've got a messy relationship. There are funny scenes, but also touching scenes. Watch this for a boost of romance and some crazy mishaps!
These are the four dramas I will start with. Stay tuned for more reviews and drama recommendations!
